So everyone I have talked to says to go into sales for a year or two then try to focus on a specific peice of hardware and go for Sales Engineering positions.

As far as being part of a profit center, I've been pre-sales the last 11 years - if you perform well, it can be a career for life. If you want to move on to other things, HP does provide for that as well.
